Since March 2025, South Australia's coastline has been grappling with a harmful algal bloom (HAB) that has severely impacted marine life, the fishing industry, and tourism.
The bloom, attributed to the proliferation of the microalgae Karenia mikimotoi, has led to the deaths of thousands of marine creatures and has caused health issues among beachgoers, including respiratory problems and eye irritation.

The affected areas span Gulf St Vincent, Spencer Gulf, Investigator Strait, and Backstairs Passage, with the bloom covering an area comparable to the size of Kangaroo Island. Despite hopes that winter conditions would mitigate the bloom, it has persisted and expanded, raising concerns about long-term ecological and economic repercussions.

In response, the South Australian government has implemented several measures to address the crisis. Temporary fishing restrictions on certain species have been imposed to allow populations to recover. Additionally, a $1.4 million program has been launched to protect Australian sea lions, an endangered species predominantly residing in South Australian waters. Efforts are also underway to restore oyster reefs, which play a crucial role in filtering water and improving its quality, thereby reducing the likelihood of future HABs.

The tourism sector has been significantly affected, with a decline in beachgoers and related activities. To counteract this, the government introduced the 'Coast is Calling - Dining Cashback program,' offering incentives to encourage visits to coastal establishments. Furthermore, a $16 million support package has been announced for fishing and marine industries, providing grants to businesses impacted by the bloom.

While these initiatives aim to mitigate the immediate effects of the HAB, experts emphasize the need for long-term strategies to prevent similar occurrences. Factors such as climate change and marine heatwaves have been linked to the proliferation of harmful algal blooms, indicating that addressing these underlying issues is essential for the health of South Australia's marine ecosystems and the industries that depend on them.
